To Bring You My Love
New paintings inspired by PJ Harvey’s album
Artist Statement:
On my 20th birthday, my future ex husband gave me PJ Harvey’s first album, catapulting me into a period soundtracked almost exclusively by female singer songwriters of a certain era. It’s fair to say my Holy Trinity- PJ, Sinead and Tori paved the way for many more masterful songstresses to join my music collection in the years to come. And I must mention the fact that much of the exciting music being made these days is by women, so I’m obviously thrilled by that turn of events, and if you want I am more than happy to make you a playlist, it’s a great hobby and therapeutic process of mine.
But back to “Dry”. From the jump, the often grim and/or lurid lyrics crossed with Polly Jean’s powerful voice and her band’s heavy sound had me. I did not yet know what a Sheila-Na-Gig was, but I was delighted to learn. It was love at first listen. At a time when this kind of sound was often created by male musicians, PJH felt revelatory. Polly Jean herself wasn’t easy to pin down, dodging questions about her gender when interviewed because how tiresome is that? Yet she channeled a high-glam/femme persona when 1995’s “To Bring You My Love” released. My fandom firmly cemented, this album and its final song in particular had me in a chokehold. In the ensuing 30 plus years I must have listened to it thousands of times. While characteristically dark and melodramatic it retains an air of graceful acceptance, although of what exactly I am still uncertain. The paintings in this show are all inspired by this album. I hope they speak to its mysteries and my undying love for its creator.

The gallery operates seasonally June-October each year. Each exhibition lasts about two weeks and the hours are Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 1-5:30 PM but midweek hours and private showings are also available via request or by chance.
The shows are by invitation, any interested parties are welcome to submit their ideas for showings, classes or gatherings of any kind.
The “business” model of the gallery is and always has been providing artists a space they can utilize without worry of being monetized and exploited. It’s sustained by myself, the artists I’ve invited to show there and the yearly fundraiser called the Spring Hop. The goal is to continue to offer the space at a very low cost to the artists so that they can retain ALL profits from their sales. This has always been the number one priority of the gallery: to assist deserving hard working artists by offering a generously supportive and affordable space.
Thank you for your time and interest, see you soon!
